17-year-old shot in leg in Salinas

SALINAS, Calif.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting around 9 p.m. Friday at a parking lot at 1020 Del Monte Ave. but did not find the gunman when they arrived there.

At 11:38 p.m., a 17-year-old admitted gang member sought medical attention at the emergency room of a hospital with a superficial gunshot wound to his left thigh. A second round tore through his shirt but did not hit his body, police said.

Although initially uncooperative with the investigation, the 17-year-old victim eventually admitted that he was shot at the parking lot on Del Monte Avenue.

The teen said he was hanging out alone in the parking lot when he heard gunshots, dropped to the ground and saw a thin man wearing a black beanie run toward a nearby apartment complex, police said.

Witnesses told police that they saw the gunman shoot several rounds and then run to an awaiting vehicle, described as a Mitsubishi Galant that sped away from the area. Police were unable to locate the vehicle and are continuing the investigation.
