Last strands of steel wire installed on new Bay Bridge

SAN FRANCISCO

Construction crews are now installing the last of 137 strands of steel wire, which will ultimately support the deck of the new bridge.

They've been installing it, day and night, since mid-December, sometimes four strands a day. Once all the strands are connected to the bridge deck, they will be compacted to form a single cable, two and a half feet in diameter.

It actually loops from one end of the bridge and back along the other side, making it the largest single loop suspension bridge in the world.
