Oakland firefighters witness shooting during fire

OAKLAND, Calif.

Everything started around 9:15 a.m. in the 1600 block of 14th Street. Firefighters originally responded to a one-alarm fire they think was started by a water cooler next to some chemicals that ignited a mattress. Two adults and 10 children were displaced and it's believed that as many as 14 people may have been forced from their home.

As fire crews were working on the fire, one of the firefighters heard gunshots a couple blocks away. Then, someone involved in the shooting ran to the firefighters for help. Just as one of the fire trucks was released from the apartment fire, firefighters spotted the shooting victim who had been transported to the scene.

Police established a separate crime scene in the 1400 block of Peralta but have not released much information about the shooting. They say they do not believe the two incidents are related.
