LGBT activists to mark day against homophobia

SAN FRANCISCO

The day, abbreviated as IDAHO, commemorates the World Health Organization's 1990 decision to remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders, according to organizers.

Local LGBT activists from Gays Without Borders and other groups plan to assemble at noon at UN Plaza to talk about hate crimes in the Bay Area and around the world.

Flags in the plaza, located at Market and Seventh streets, will be lowered briefly to half-staff in memory of those who have died as a result of bias-motivated crimes, according to organizers.

Supervisor David Campos is expected to attend the event, which will be followed by a 4 p.m. reception at Cafe Flore at Market and Noe streets.
