Herd of goats to clear vegetation near SFO

MILLBRAE, Calif.

The goats are being used to clear vegetation and create a firebreak on the west side of Airport property bounded by U.S. Highway 101 and railroad tracks in San Bruno and Millbrae, according to airport officials.

The property is an environmentally sensitive area containing two endangered species, the San Francisco garter snake and the California red-legged frog. The goats can clear vegetation in areas where the airport is not legally able to use heavy machinery or personnel, officials said.

The goats will be supervised by a herder and an environmental biologist. They are expected to take around two weeks to finish clearing the area.
