Both members of the cable car's crew, the Muni gripman and conductor, ended up being taken to the hospital after suffering minor injuries, but none of the cable cars' passengers were hurt in the mishap.
Police have taken the SUV's driver into custody. They say he appears intoxicated.
Investigators remained on the scene past 11 p.m. to interview witnesses.
