Gunmen attack 2 army checkpoints in Ivory Coast

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast

Kouassi Kakao, communications chief for the military chief of staff, said the attacks occurred Monday on checkpoints in the villages of Pekambly and Pahoubly, not far from the town of Toulepleu. No information was immediately available on whether there were any casualties.

At least 11 soldiers were killed last week in attacks in the commercial capital, Abidjan, and officials said two separate attacks were reported outside the city.

Officials have blamed the attacks on rogue soldiers and loyalists of former President Laurent Gbagbo, who refused to concede defeat in the November 2010 election against current President Alassane Ouattara.

The post-election standoff sparked violence in the West African nation that killed at least 3,000.
