The National Football League announced Tuesday afternoon that NFL team owners will vote next May on whether San Francisco or South Florida will host Super Bowl L in 2016. It will then be between the runner-up and Houston to host Super Bowl LI in 2017.
"There's no better place to play host to the Super Bowl and celebrate one of our greatest sports than San Francisco and the Bay Area," Mayor Ed Lee said in a press release Tuesday. "A Super Bowl in the Bay Area will bring an enormous economic boost to our entire region and leave a lasting legacy for Bay Area youth."
49ers CEO Jed York said, "We are excited to bid for the first Super Bowl in the Bay Area since January of 1985. Nothing brings a region together like a Super Bowl. Now we have to work together to show the new stadium in Santa Clara will put on a great show."
If San Francisco wins its bid for either Super Bowl, the game would be played at the new 49ers stadium currently under construction in Santa Clara.
