Bank robbery suspect surrenders after standoff

SANTA CLARA, Calif.

This all happened Tuesday night at an apartment complex in Santa Clara at Pruneridge and Saratoga avenues.

The scene started around 3 p.m. with an armed bank robbery about three miles away in San Jose. As soon as the police figured out the suspect was in one of the apartments, they immediately evacuated six other apartment residents and police negotiators took over from there.

"Within the last two hours, approximately, we were able to have some two-way dialogue with the suspect until he successfully and safely surrendered," said Santa Clara Lt. Matt Hogan.

Negotiators threw a phone through a window and used it to talk with him. As of 11 p.m. San Jose police have not yet released the name of the suspect who they believe robbed a Bank of the West at 2200 Business Circle.

Around 10 p.m. the man gave up peacefully and walked out of the apartment complex.
