New data shows drop in OPD traffic stops

The San Francisco Chronicle has obtained new statistics from the Oakland Police Department showing a dramatic drop in the number of stops they perform. They show Oakland police officers are stopping roughly 75 percent fewer drivers and pedestrians this year than they did just three years ago.

These trends preceded citywide increases in crime, which is up in 2012 for the second year in a row. Major crimes like robbery and burglary are up 23 percent this year.
