The first struck at 2:36 a.m. followed by an aftershock about 15 minutes later. They were originally reported as 6.4 and 6.1, but the USGS has now downgraded them to 6.3, which is strong and 4.7, which experts consider light.
The quakes were centered at least 88 miles southwest of Catalina Island. No tsunami warning was issued. Southern Californians said they were shaken out of bed, but so far, no reports of damage or any injuries
