ABC News has learned that President Obama will nominate Senator John Kerry to be secretary of state.

The Massachusetts Democrat became the front runner when U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice withdrew from consideration.

Republicans were unhappy with her initial explanation of the attack on a U.S. Consulate in Libya that killed four Americans. It will be several days before the selection process is finalized.

Secretary of State Hilary Clinton is set to retire in the next few weeks.
