Hwy 1 near Big Sur reopens after rockslide

BIG SUR, Calif.

A major rockslide on Sunday afternoon shut the highway down just south of Deetjens Big Sur Inn (Mile Marker 42) and at Lucia (Mile Marker 23). The huge boulders, which had been blocking the lanes, have now been cleared away.

The highway reopened at 4 p.m. Thursday to unrestricted, two-way traffic. But starting at 7 a.m. Friday, expect 20 minute delays as crews take care of some final clean-up work.

The rockslide south of Gorda at Mile Marker 7 was cleared at noon on Monday.
