Researchers are now offering a glimmer of hope in the battle against autism. A small and controversial new study found that some children who are diagnosed early can actually grow out of the disorder by the time they're adults.

All the children in the study had a relatively mild form of autism and a slightly higher IQ. They also received intensive therapy and support.

Skeptics say those children may have just been misdiagnosed.

The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health.
