'My Fitness Pal' app helps UCSF workers watch what they eat

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.

If you go to the cafeteria at UCSF Medical Center, you'll see barcodes next to the food the hospital prepares in house. UCSF uploaded all the nutritional data of their cafeteria food onto the "My Fitness Pal" app. Users only need to scan the food item to keep track of how much fat, carbs and calories they're eating.

"They can scan it and then use it to track how many calories they are consuming in the course of a day to see if they are going maybe over or under, depending on the goal they've set," said Dan Henroid from the UCSF Nutrition & Food Services.

"My Fitness Pal" is not exclusive to UCSF. It can be used by anyone to scan barcodes from thousands of food items. It was created by two brothers who now base their company in San Francisco.
