State Senator Leland Yee says the number of pedestrian fatalities dramatically decreased since the double fines went into effect back in 2008. There were 15 deaths on Van Ness and 19th Avenue from 2003 to 2007, but not a single one in 2009 and 2010.
Statistics for the last two years haven't been released.
The current law expires at the end of 2013.
