Fremont gun buyback collects over 300 weapons

PITTSBURG, Calif.

A final count showed the anonymous buyback event for residents of Fremont, Newark and Union City collected 339 weapons including 6 assault rifles, 149 handguns and 184 rifles, police said today. A total of $50,300 was distributed.

All weapons were required to be in working condition and capable of firing a round, and payouts were limited to 10 guns per vehicle on a first-come, first-served basis.

Many residents were happy to have the guns out of the house, a police spokesman said in statements on Twitter during the buyback event. At least one person declined any money for his weapon.
