History was made in San Francisco Wednesday as officials broke ground on what's expected to be the tallest skyscraper on the West Coast.

Mayor Ed Lee and other dignitaries celebrated the start of construction on the new Transbay Transit Tower. The tower will go up next to the new Transbay Transit Center at First and Mission Streets.

It will be 1,070 feet tall, more than 50 feet taller than the current record-holder, the old Library Tower in downtown L.A.

The project is expected to be finished in 2016.
