Suspect dies, sheriff's deputy hurt after Oakland stop

OAKLAND, Calif.

It happened after the officers pulled over a car on San Leandro Boulevard near 33rd Avenue around 9:30 p.m. SKY 7HD was over the scene where a passenger was arrested for drug possession. Officers say the driver refused to get out of the car.

Sgt. J.D. Nelson says that's when "things went sideways." When a deputy reached through the passenger side door, Nelson says the driver tried to speed away, dragging the officer with him.

Both deputies then fired several shots.

"Suspect driver of the car was hit multiple times and later died at Highland Hospital," Sgt. Nelson said. "The deputy received a gunshot wound to his foot and is recovering at Highland.

Because the shooting by sheriff's deputies happened in Oakland, the investigation is being handled by Oakland police.
