Boats prepare for start of commercial salmon season

Boats lined up early at Pier 45 to stock up on crushed ice. That's where they'll be putting the wild salmon they'll be catching off the California coast.

Purists say early season salmon has a special taste because the fish are feeding on krill and tiny shrimp.

"We're excited," said Larry Collins with the SF Community Fishing Association. "We're going to go catch California King Salmon. So by the end of the week we should be having King Salmon on the market."

The price hasn't been set yet. But in the past it's ranged between $4 and $7 a pound.

The salmon season will be interrupted twice -- in June and July -- to protect the King Salmon while it makes its run to the Sacramento River. That's when they lay their eggs for the winter hatching.
