The crash was reported at about 8:15 a.m. just west of the Airway Boulevard off-ramp, Officer Ron Simmons said.
Initial reports indicated that a black SUV hit another car and overturned. Two passengers were ejected from the SUV, Simmons said.
Both were unconscious in the fast lane, and at least one was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.
A Sig-alert was issued at 8:35 a.m. when the CHP closed the three left lanes, Simmons said.
As of 8:40 a.m., the coroner's office had been summoned and a medical helicopter was en route to the scene, Simmons said.
