A rest stop on Interstate 280 in San Mateo County was named Friday in honor of a California Highway Patrol officer who was gunned down 51 years ago.

In 1962, Officer Dale Krings, 34, was having breakfast with his partner at a coffee shop in Burlingame when a man opened fire, mortally wounding Krings.

Krings managed to shoot and kill the suspect, protecting his partner and 20 customers in the restaurant.
