San Francisco police honor horses for service

SAN FRANCISCO

The horseshoes of the retired horses, Rebel and Magnum, were nailed above the entrance of Lefty O'Doul's restaurant.

Rebel will head off to a ranch in Davis where he will get all the vet care that he needs and food he can eat. Magnum died in May.

Also on Monday, two new horses joined the force. Quin and Strider were formally introduced to the public as the newest members of the mounted patrol unit.

The horses made their debut in Union Square. Even Police Chief Greg Suhr greeted them and welcomed them to the force.

The horses, which you'll mostly see in Golden Gate Park and sometimes downtown, serve an important role. In downtown, they give the officers a vantage point up above the crowds. In Golden Gate Park, they help them reach hard to get to places.
