Oakland's Youth UpRising holding 'coming out party'

OAKLAND, Calif.

The "We are Family!" celebration at the Youth Uprising campus at 8711 MacArthur Blvd. begins at 3:30 p.m. and features vocal and dance performances by gay youths and their allies, a fashion show, a resource fair, a raffle and refreshments, according to event organizer Neda Said.

The celebration is free and open to the public. It is intended to offer a space where LGBTQ youths and their families can feel comfortable with their sexual identity, she said.

"We are creating a safe space for everybody," Said said.

The resource fair is a collaboration by 12 local organizations that work with queer youths.

"It's an opportunity to get more information and be in a fun space," she said.

Youth UpRising opened in 2005 and serves as a center for youth, providing resources and leadership development opportunities.
