A coalition of supporters say Marcus Book Store has played a key role in leading San Francisco's African American community through periods of what they call "urban removal."
They say Marcus Book Store is just the latest African American business in the community to be either displaced or gentrified. They want city leaders to help get new property owners to accept the store's offer to buy.
"So there's meaning here," said Julian Davis, attorney for Marcus Book Store. "This is a place where John Coltrane and Duke Ellington played, and this is a place where you can come and read about John Coltrane and Duke Ellington, about black music, about black history, about black culture, about black intellect. And I think that's why people are invested in this particular location."
Supporters are sending emails and writing letters hoping to convince the new owners to negotiate a land sale to allow Marcus Book Store to stay.
