Fire crews rescue man from burning home

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.

The fire was reported at 1:01 p.m. in the 1900 block of First Avenue, a dispatcher said.

Fire Capt. Robert Marshall said a passerby called 911 from a cellphone to report seeing black smoke coming from the back of a home.

Crews arrived and discovered that a fire had started in a room of the home and spread to the attic, Marshall said.

Firefighters searched the house and found a man unconscious in the room where the fire had started, Marshall said. They brought him out to the front lawn, where he regained consciousness.

The victim, who had suffered minor burns and smoke inhalation, was taken to a hospital by ambulance for treatment.

The blaze was controlled within 25 minutes, Marshall said.

The cause remains under investigation and there is no damage estimate yet.
