Hayward police praise teen for thwarting burglary

HAYWARD, Calif.

Residents say their Hayward neighborhood is a usually quiet, but there was quite a commotion Wednesday around 10:30 a.m.

Police were looking for 22-year-old parolee Kwinan Brathwaite and an accomplice. They say the men were trying to rob a house where a 13-year-old girl and her 8-year-old brother were home alone.

Hayward Police Sgt Mark Ormsby says the teenager did the right thing by hiding in a bedroom and calling her mom, who called 911.

"I was super proud of her," Hayward Police Sgt. Mark Ormsby said. "You know, 13 years old, to be able to make a split-second decision to grab her younger sibling and then take them both to a room and then call someone really took a lot of courage."

The men ran off as police arrived. Neighbors who watched officers search their backyards, are shocked.

"Seven, eight patrol cars here," neighbor Mohammad Adle said. "I never saw anything, this neighborhood is very quiet, I leave my doors open sometimes, so nothing like that."

While police have one suspect in custody, they hope the public will call in with tips to help them find the other.
