The seizure happened Sunday morning, the last day of the Outside Lands music festival taking place in Golden Gate Park. A tenant of an apartment on Mission and 29th streets called police at about 9 a.m., saying someone tried to break into the building. Responding officers saw a broken window and a blood trail. They followed it to another apartment where Benjamin Hagerl lives.
"He answered the door to the apartment and the officers observed his hand bleeding and blood on his clothes," San Francisco Police Cmdr. Hector Sainez said.
They went inside to see if someone else was hurt. That's when they saw Steven Terrell. Police also found something else -- ecstasy. There were 23 kilograms of powder, 30,000 pills and $30,000 in cash.
"The narcotics on the table...have a street value in excess of $1.5 million," San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr said.
Investigators believe the ecstasy may have been headed to Outside Lands, which drew almost 200,000 people. As it turned out, most of the arrests there were only for alcohol.
"We made a couple of arrests, not many at Outside Lands for possession of what's called 'dangerous drugs,' so it's certainly fortunate none of this made it out there," Suhr said.
ABC7 News spoke to several people who attended the Outside Lands. They didn't see a lot of drugs, but they say ecstasy is popular especially among younger concertgoers.
"It's a drug that kind of stimulates the senses and the music is kind of enhanced," concertgoer Calvin Wong said.
"It's popular with like, young people, people who are going to be listening to electronic music," concertgoer Josh Cervantes said.
Hagerl and Terrell, both San Francisco residents, were taken into custody on suspicion of possession of controlled substances for sale, maintaining a place for selling or using controlled substances and conspiracy to commit a crime, according to police.
Terrell also has a separate drug trafficking case pending in Illinois that involves the sale of marijuana in that state, Suhr said.
