Campbell mayor takes action against FDA blood drive policy

CAMPBELL, Calif.

Mayor Evan Low is gay and held a blood drive last month, but was unable to donate himself.

Low posted a petition on Change.org urging the FDA to end the policy, instituted after the outset of the AIDS crisis.

So far, he's received 17,000 signatures.

Low says it's time to show the rest of the world that the FDA policy should be based on science and not 30-year-old fears.

The chances of contracting HIV or AIDS from donated blood is one in two million.
