UC Davis expert issues warning over jerky treats for pets

DAVIS, California

The warning comes as the Food and Drug Administration is investigating the link between the deaths of almost 600 dogs and jerky treats imported from China.

Researchers still haven't determined the exact cause of the illnesses.

"We have a hardline from our nutrition support service and our hospital that just says 'don't feed a jerky treat'. Since we don't know what's causing it, it's best to not go there. There are many other supplements that you can use," UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine Dr. Karl Jandrey said.

The symptoms of the illness include diarrhea, vomiting and decreased appetite.

The FDA is asking pet owners and veterinarians to send more information about any pet illnesses that fit the pattern.
