Novato elementary, middle schools to get security cameras

NOVATO, Calif.

Our media partner, the Marin Independent Journal, reports that the Novato Unified School District is spending more than $120,000 for the 48 cameras. The district spent $177,000 last year to outfit two high schools with cameras.

District officials say the cameras are part of a continuing effort to keep students safe and discourage vandalism to school property.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the percentage of schools in the U.S. with security cameras went from 19 percent to 61 percent from the period of 1999 to 2009.
