Marin County had California's second-highest rate of whooping cough infections last year, according to a new report.

Officials with the California Department of Public Health say 173 Marin residents developed whooping cough, or pertussis, last year. That's second to only Nevada County.

Our media partner, the Marin Independent Journal, reports last year's big outbreak hit in the spring. It mostly affected school-aged children.

One public health official blames Marin's high infection rate on parents who hesitate to get their children vaccinated.
