Pedestrian killed after running into traffic on Highway 101 in SJ

SAN JOSE, Calif.

The collision occurred around 11:05 p.m. on southbound Highway 101 south of North First Street, the CHP is reporting

According to the CHP, a male pedestrian was walking from the center of the roadway toward the right shoulder and began running across the lanes as motorists swerved to avoid him.

The pedestrian ran directly into the path of Honda Accord, collided with the car and came to rest in a right lane, according to the CHP.

As the driver pulled to the side of the roadway, an SUV struck the pedestrian and continued driving, the CHP is reporting.

A second SUV also collided with the pedestrian's body. That driver exited the freeway but returned to the scene a short time later.

The pedestrian, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

CHP officials said it is unclear whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision.

The deadly collision blocked all southbound lanes on Highway 101 for about two hours, according to the CHP.

The CHP continues to investigate the incident and is asking any witnesses to call Officer Jared Strubeck at (408) 467-5400, ext. 395.
