The Oakland Police Department is considering getting rid of ShotSpotter technology, the city's gunshot detection system.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, interim police Chief Sean Whent proposed doing away with the $264,000 a year program because it's too expensive.

Whent says the money could be used on other things, like a police helicopter.

Many residents say they oppose the idea.
