Vallejo teen suspected of DUI in fatal head-on crash in San Leandro

SAN LEANDRO, Calif.

Officers responded to reports of the crash at about 10:45 p.m. on E. 14th Street just north of Davis Street, San Leandro police Lt. Robert McManus said.

Traffic investigators believe 19-year-old Jesus Antonio Godinez, a Vallejo resident, was driving north on E. 14th Street at a high rate of speed and crossed into oncoming traffic near the intersection of Davis Street, according to McManus.

That's when Godinez's vehicle collided head-on with another vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 32-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 56-year-old passenger in that vehicle suffered major injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

Godinez, the sole occupant of his vehicle, was also injured and transported to a hospital for treatment, McManus said. Godinez has been arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter and is being guarded by police at the hospital, according to McManus.

Police also suspect Godinez was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. Upon his release from the hospital, Gonzalez will be transferred to the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.

"This is a horrible tragedy that will impact the San Leandro community," McManus said. "We offer our condolences to the family of the man that lost his life due to another senseless act."

The name of the man killed in the crash has not yet been released, according to McManus.
