SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGO) -- If you're a parent and work for a small company, you could soon be able to take six weeks of job-protected leave.
That proposed law was sent to Governor Jerry Brown's desk Wednesday by the Assembly.

Small businesses with 20 or more employees will be required to allow new parents to take six weeks of unpaid leave without losing their job.
The bill affects more than 2.5 million California workers.
If the governor signs the bill into law, it will take effect January 1, 2018.
