OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- The Oakland Fire Department Fire Prevention Bureau held a Fire Safety Day at the Lake Merritt Garden Center Tuesday and taught 500 to 600 Oakland school children the importance of fire prevention and safety.
This event is a part of National Fire Prevention Week, which runs through October 15. It's a nationwide effort to promote fire safety.
The theme of this year's event was "Don't Wait Check the Date: Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years."
Children participated in a variety of hands-on activities and lectures, with the ultimate goal of providing fire safety information to be used both at home and school.
