OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- A white Kia SUV led police in a wild chase through the East Bay Tuesday afternoon.

SKY7 caught up with the pursuit as the driver sped through East Oakland city streets, and at one point drove around Oakland Airport.

The driver went the wrong way on the shoulder of Interstate-580 near Edwards Avenue in East Oakland. The driver did not stay on the freeway for long and exited.

Police on the ground relied on the Oakland police helicopter to follow the car, given how reckless the driving was.

The pursuit made its way through the Caldecott Tunnel into Contra Costa County.

Before SKY7 lost the vehicle, it sped down San Pablo Dam Road.

The chase was reportedly called off by police as the SUV entered the Caldecott Tunnel and the police chopper needed to return to the airport to refuel.

Although the police were no longer following the chase in Contra Costa and Alameda counties, the SUV continued to drive erratically at times and, at other times, drive normally through city traffic.

SKY7 left the chase in Berkeley during the time that the car was mostly obeying traffic laws.

ABC7 News has asked Oakland police what the driver was wanted for and if they were able to track them down, and we will provide an update when we hear back.
