World Cup fans flock to Civic Center for viewing party

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Hundreds of people showed up to Civic Center Plaza in San Francisco Saturday to watch the World Cup games on a big screen.

Organizers expect about 1,000-2,000 people every day that the big screen is up.

This is the second time the city's Recreation and Parks Department has hosted a World Cup viewing party at Civic Center Plaza.

"We want people from every neighborhood, tourists from all over to come out and watch the most popular sport in the world to watch this together rather than at home alone," Rec and Parks spokesperson Lisa Barnsten said.

The city plans to host six more of the viewing parties.

The larger goal is to really activate Civic Center Plaza and bring more family friendly programs to the area. Just a week after the World Cup games end, there will be a new city-run soccer camp for kids starting.
