SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The TSA says its agents discovered a record number of guns at airport checkpoints last year.

Security screeners found nearly 3,400 firearms in carry-on bags at 238 U.S. airports. That means an average of around nine guns found per day. The total represents a 28-percent increase over the 2015 totals.

In all, the TSA screened more than 738 million passengers, and 466 million checked bags in 2016.
