Bay Area Martin Luther King Jr. events

Both the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District and Bay Area Rapid Transit will be operating on normal hours instead of holiday hours in order to transport residents to various events throughout the bay, according to spokesmen for both transit agencies.

One of the largest events taking place is the rally, teach-in, speeches and other entertainment at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. The all-day event will start at 9 a.m.

Members of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Association of Santa Clara Valley will be riding the "Freedom Train" from the Caltrain San Jose Diridon Station to San Francisco. From there they will conduct a "Freedom March" that will take them to the Civic Center to join in the celebrations. Marchers should arrive at the Civic Center at 1:30 p.m.

Caltrain produces the "Freedom Train" with the association every year and around 1,600 passengers are expected to make the journey to San Francisco.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency will have its own "Freedom Train," which will depart from the Sunnydale Station and follow the T-Third route from Visitacion Valley to the Montgomery station.

On the other side of the bay, the East Bay Regional Parks will honor King by hosting clean-up efforts in Garretson Point in Oakland. Tri-Valley Communities Against a Radioactive Environment will hold a peace march in Livermore to honor the late orator.

Congressman George Miller, D-Martinez, will speak at another parade held for King, at Hogan High School in Vallejo.

Back in San Francisco residents can end their evening in celebration of King's life by attending Youth Speaks' 11th annual "Bringing the Noise for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.," at Herbst Theatre. The event will feather 20 young performers speaking about civil rights and the post-civil rights era.
