700 infected trees removed from park

SAN FRANCISCO Work crews at MacKerricher State Park near Fort Bragg have had to remove about 700 trees believed to be attacked by beetles and bacterial fungus.

Rangers suspect a dry spring this year is helping to produce ideal conditions for the rapid spread of the infestations in the park.

An official with the State Parks' Mendocino District says pine beetles have been leading to the destruction of the trees by laying eggs under bark and carrying fungi into the wood.

The tree cannot be saved once infested.

Rangers are trying to replace the trees that were cut down with seedlings.
