Group calls for tighter FDA regulations

In the wake of the salmonella outbreak initially linked to tomatoes, a consumer group is calling on the FDA to tighten regulations for producers of fruits and vegetables.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest says better tracking is needed so investigators can more easily find the sources of outbreaks of salmonella, E. coli and other dangerous germs.

Since April, 869 cases of salmonella have been reported. Interviews with people who got sick led state and federal officials to first blame tomatoes, but to date the FDA has not been able to pinpoint the source of the outbreak.
