Man charged in parking garage murder

SAN FRANCISCO

The suspect, Peter Fong, remained at San Francisco General Hospital today with an undisclosed medical condition and was unable to be arraigned in San Francisco Superior Court.

Assistant District Attorney George Butterworth said his office has filed murder charges against Fong for allegedly killing 59-year-old Ryosuke Yoshioka on Wednesday afternoon.

Police said Fong attacked Yoshioka, also of San Francisco, in the parking garage located above the OfficeMax at 3700 Geary Blvd. at about 2:45 p.m.

"We're not entirely sure what provoked the incident," Butterworth said today.

Preliminary investigations indicate Fong may have suffered from some "psychiatric issues," Butterworth said. Fong appears not to have known the victim and has no criminal history, he added.

In his absence, Judge Gail Dekreon ordered Fong held on a no-bail status until his medical issue could be resolved. He is due back in court Monday.

According to police, witnesses to the attack were able to detain Fong inside the garage until police arrived and arrested him.

Any additional witnesses are asked to contact the Police Department's homicide detail at (415) 553-1145 or the confidential tip line at (415) 575-4444.
