The seal pup was first reported to police after he was seen on the Richmond Parkway near Giant Road at about 1:20 a.m. on May 21, according to the Richmond Police Department.

The four-month-old youngster was eventually corralled by a marine mammal rescue team and taken to the Main Marine Mammal Center to rehabilitate. Caretakers at the facility named the pup "Moody" after Richmond police Officer Brad Moody, who died in service in 2008.

An announcement was made on Tuesday that Moody the seal had died due to malnourishment, according to the mammal center's Web site.
