Smith and Hawken closes its doors

Smith and Hawken, the high-end garden store that was born in Mill Valley 30 years ago is shutting its doors for good.

Thursday its parent company, Scotts Miracle-Gro, announced that its closing all 56 Smith and Hawken stores across the country by the end of the year.

700 employees will lose their jobs, including 70 at the corporate headquarters in Novato.

The Smith and Hawken website is already out of business.

It's referring customers to retail stores where liquidation sales have begun.
