Study links zip code to health, life expectancy

The likelihood that you will get sick or even die seems to be a function of where you live.

Our media partners at the Bay Area News Group have spent a year doing research into poverty, violence, and exposure to toxic chemicals.

What they have found is that if you live in the affluent zip code of 94597 (Walnut Creek) you are likely to live to the age of 87. But if you live in the middle class zip code of 94546 (Castro Valley) your life expectancy drops to 79. In East Oakland, it is 71.
