Caltrans to blast big rock on Hwy 50

POLLOCK PINES, CA

On Monday, Caltrans crews began the prep work for the big job. They'll use explosives to blast away a 400-ton slab of granite teetering over the highway, about six miles east of Pollock Pines.

"They'll drill the holes, put the dynamite in tomorrow, cover it up with a blast blanket so the rocks don't become shrapnel. We're going to close the highway at that time for 30 to 45 minutes, we're going to blast, clear the roadway, and let you back through," said Caltrans spokeswoman Rochelle Jenkins.

The blast is scheduled to take place at 8 a.m., weather permitting.
