Nikolai Lamar Bonds, who turned 20 on Dec. 18, faces five misdemeanor counts that could land him in county jail for at least two years if convicted, Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
He has been charged with one count of battery, one count of false imprisonment, one count of vandalism, one count of threatening a police officer and one count of obstructing a police officer, Wagstaffe said.
The charges stem from an altercation at his mother Sun Bonds' Menlo Park house Dec. 5, where Nikolai Bonds lives as well, according to Wagstaffe.
Police were notified at about 10 a.m. of an argument between the two.
Nikolai Bonds and his mother had apparently gotten into a fight about some jewelry that had been taken from the house, Wagstaffe said.
"They were shouting and screaming, then he went into a bedroom and started smashing furniture," Wagstaffe said.
Sun Bonds then called a friend, who called 911, and when she tried to leave the house her son allegedly prevented her from doing so, according to Wagstaffe.
"She tried to open the door and he would slam it shut," Wagstaffe said. "Then he spit in her face."
Responding officers detained Nikolai Bonds, who then allegedly threatened one officer and the officer's family, Wagstaffe said.
Bonds was taken into custody, posted $50,000 bail and was released from custody at about 10 p.m. that same day.
He is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday in Redwood City for his initial arraignment.
