SFSU researchers creating weight-loss iPhone app

SAN FRANCISCO

The researchers are developing an app that will initially help teenagers manage their food choices and eating habits. 100 overweight teens will be selected from low-income neighborhoods in San Francisco to take part in the study.

"For example, if you're going to sit down and have a meal, you would sit down and take a picture of that meal and then you compare it with another picture that got loaded for you on the iPod that shows what a serving size really it," researcher Katherine Kim explained.

The app will also allow users to track their progress over time. Once the study is complete, researchers hope the app will become available as part of a free service.
